New Sony Vaio P On FCC, Slated For Fall Release

Sony has posted a FCC notice for a new Vaio P model named AK8PCG1R2L. This isn’t the model number that consumers will see, but rather the FCC ID – the official model number is PCG-1R2L. The only hard information we know at this time is that it has the same size as the current Vaio P, and also has 802.11b/g/n and bluetooth. Sony has withheld the delicious stuff in this report so we’ll just have to wait till October (when document confidentiality expires) and see what happens. Could we see a 2ghz Vaio P in North America, finally? Japan has had one for months. The highest ghz model in North America, at this time of writing (on sonystyle.com), is a $1,999 1.86ghz Signature Version. Here’s another image that came with the FCC report:

NVIDIA Ion LE 1080p GPU confirmed: cheaper, drops DirectX 10

NVIDIA have released a second graphics product in their Ion range, the Ion LE, intended for entry-level devices such as netbooks and nettops. Ion LE is apparently exactly the same as the existing Ion – which boosts netbook video performance to handle 1080p high-definition – aside from it lacks DirectX 10 support.

“ION LE is SKU of the ION GPU that is identical to ION, except it only supports DX9. This product is designed specifically for Windows XP on Netbooks and Nettops and we are going to offer LE SKU just for OEM market” Igor Stanek, product PR manager, NVIDIA EMEA Ion/Notebook products

A second proviso is that Ion LE will only be available for Windows XP based systems. By switching from DirectX 10 to DirectX 9, the assumption is that manufacturers and vendors will be able to price their Ion-based netbooks and nettops lower than existing versions, with no significant loss of functionality to most end-users.

Currently adding NVIDIA Ion to a netbook is said to add around $50 to its purchase price. NVIDIA have not released pricing details for the Ion LE, and nor have they revealed which will be the first manufacturers and products to use the new chipset. While there’s also no product page for the GPU, it is listed among those supported by the latest GeForce/Ion driver release.

Averatec's N3400 reviewed: looks good, performs well, dies early

Averatec probably isn't the first name that pops into your head when you think of cleanly designed thin laptops, but if the $800 N3400 is any indication of things to come, that could change. Laptop had a chance to review the 13-inch machine and found its slim, aluminum body compares favorably to the MacBook Air -- despite being nearly a full inch thick. The 1,280 x 800 glossy display was rated as "decent," the dual-core 2.16GHz Intel T3400 processor paired with 3GB of RAM gave very good performance, but unplugged longevity was where it all went wrong. Just over three hours was the mark this machine achieved and, while the battery is replaceable, a screwdriver is required to do the deed, meaning it probably isn't an operation you want to attempt whilst sitting in coach. So, if you need a powerful ultraportable that won't break the bank, this looks to be it -- so long as you aren't planning any long trips

Fujitsu's CELSIUS ULTRA gaming PC caught on video

It's not exactly the most exhaustive of hands-ons, but the video after the break appears to be one of the very first looks at Fujitsu's much-hyped CELSIUS ULTRA gaming PC which, as promised, made its debut at the big KnastLAN event in Germany this weekend. From the sound of things, however, Fujitsu still isn't quite ready to dish out many details about the system's specs, although it does apparently make use of a pair of unspecified overclocked NVIDIA graphics cards in an SLI configuration, and it was reportedly able to run Crysis "impressively" at a full 120 fps. Head on past the break to see it for yourself.

DIY Eee Keyboard is big, beautiful, and highly coveted

I’m starting to think Russia is breeding a new species of super-netbook hackers. All the coolest netbook-to-carputer hacks I’ve seen have come out of Russia. And now another Russian hacker has decided that rather than waiting for Asus to release it’s Eee Keyboard, he would build his own by cramming the guts of an Eee PC 900 into a Sven Multimedia EL 4002 keyboard.

The DIY Eee Keyboard may not have wireless HDMI, and it may not be as slim as the real thing. But it does pack a full computer inside a keyboard case, plus a VGA output, a few USB ports, and other goodies including headphone jacks and a built in mic. It’s probably more suited for use as a desktop PC than a home theater PC. But it’s still pretty awesome.

ViewSonic's VOT120 and VOT121 nettops suck in their guts for the camera

Unsatisfied with only having the tall and slim 130 and 132 nettops, ViewSonic's newly announced family of hardware also features a pair of even more diminutive options: the VOT120 and 121. Snapped in the wild for your delectation, these machines are small enough to be confused for a well-filled CD wallet and come with WiFi, four USB inputs, gigabit Ethernet and DVI-out. While the 120's standard netbook spec is nothing to write home about, the 121 does receive a (comparatively) potent 1.4GHz CULV chip and a HDMI output 'round back, making for an intriguing HTPC proposition. Prices in Taiwan are set for $304 and $423 respectively, but feel free to browse past the break for an inquisitive look at these miniature computers.

Acer's Aspire Predator gaming rig gets even faster, stays just as orange

Just a few weeks too late for a Transformers 2 tie-in, Acer has announced a new revision of its Aspire G desktop, a.k.a. Predator. It shares the same case with the earlier edition that hit the US of A late last year, but naturally has some better specs this time 'round. The CPU is now one of Intel's new Core i7 950's running at 3.06GHz, up to 12GB of DDR3 RAM is on offer, while more permanent storage is offered by a 1TB HDD and a Blu-ray reader. A pair of NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 graphics cards keep the pixels flowing over four DVI-D ports, and dual Gigabit Ethernet is on offer for those about to rock shotgun network connections. All that clad in a brilliant orange case that looks like it rolled off the Lamborghini production line, though at ¥259,800 ($2,700ish) it's a lot cheaper than the MurciĆ©lago LP 670-4 Superveloce you've been drooling over. No word on American availability, but since the last one took about four months to make it this way perhaps we'll see this one by year's end.

ASX5810: New Acer Aspire X Available Next Week

Acer also announced a new Aspire X Series dekstop PC, the ASX5810-A40F, scheduled to be released next week (August 7th).

Less impressive than the Predator previously announced, the ASX5810 is still decent and features an Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 (2.33GHz), 3GB of DDR3 (up to 8GB), an Intel G43 Express chipset, 1TB of HDD, an Nvidia GeForce GT 120 (1GB of VRAM), a DVD SuperMulti Drive, as well as 9 USB ports, eSATA port, a DVI-I port, HDMI output, a Gigabit Ethernet.

It runs on Windows Vista Home Premium (32bit) and comes with a 20" crystal brite LCD screen with a resolution of 1600x900, a response time of 5ms, and a brightness of 300cd/m2

Price: 129,800 Yen, or €975.

ASM5800 & ASM3202: New Desktop PC from Acer

BFG inadvertently outs new Intel Core i7 950 / 975 CPUs in Phobos gaming PC

So, here's an interesting one. Intel has yet to officially launch the two newest members of its Core i7 crew, but that little factoid isn't stopping BFG Technologies from doing the honors. Today, the company has introduced its freshest gaming rig, the Phobos, complete with Core i7 950 (Phobos Advanced) and Core i7 975 (Phobos Elite) CPU options. Furthermore, BFG is claiming that these new machines are the first ever to offer one-touch CPU and GPU overclocking, as all that can be handled on the front-mounted touch panel on the tower itself. Heck, there's even an integrated iPhone / iPod dock on the top of this bad boy. The Phobos rigs are yours to order right now starting at $5000 (Advanced) / $8000 (Elite), and the full release is after the break.

ViewSonic VNB101 gets handled in the wilderness of Taipei

The new ViewSonic VNB101 may be rightly accused of aping the EeePC S101 a little too closely, but if you're going to copy something, it might as well be something sexy. Netbooks News have gone hands-on with an early model, noting a multicard reader, space for a 3G SIM card, and a 3400mAh Lithium-Polymer battery, which should deliver about 5 hours of juice and degrade more slowly over time than its Li-Ion counterparts. Pricing in Taiwan is set for around $485, and for that you'll get your standard dosage of Atom N280, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD inside and a red, black or champagne paintjob on the outside. Europeans can look for these later this year, but with no word of a US release, you'll have to make do with the video past the break.

Medion's Akoya P7700 D PC will do your multimedia right on a budget

Medion has announced another quad-core, multimedia desktop PC, the Akoya P7700 D, that claims to offer top-end spec "for advanced performance".

The P7700 D gets an Intel Core 2 Quad processor, NVIDIA GeForce GT 230 graphics card, 1TB hard drive and a Blu-ray optical combo drive.

Other specs include 4GB memory, an eight channel high-definition surround sound system, and an HDMI output so you could hook up the Blu-ray playin' PC to your telly with an HDMI input.

There's also 802.11 Draft-N Wi-Fi and connectivity including USB, Firewire and eSATA for "fast and easy" connection of external SATA devices.

With Windows Vista Home Premium, software-wise there's also Microsoft Works 9 including Office Home and Student Trial Version, Medion Home Cinema Suite (PowerDirector 7, PowerProducer 5, PowerDVD 9 Ultra, Media Show), Corel Draw Essentials 3, Corel Media One, Cyberlink Power2Go 6 and a BullGuard Internet Security Pack.

Complete with a wireless keyboard and wireless mouse, the new desktop will be on sale from 31 May priced at £599 (including 3-year warranty) while stocks last at Aldi.

Walmart offers decently-spec'd Compaq laptop for $300

Not sold on the whole netbook craze? Then you might want to consider paying a visit to your local Walmart, which is set to offer a surprisingly well-spec'd Compaq Presario laptop for the low, low price of $298. As you might expect however, that model (the CQ60-419WM) isn't entirely new, but it did just debut in January of this year with a significantly higher $470 price tag, and packed enough features to make it a not terrible deal even at that price. That includes a 15.6-inch 1366x768 display, an AMD Sempron SI-42 processor, NVIDIA GeForce 8200M graphics, 3GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, a DVD burner and, of course, Windows Vista for an OS. Good enough for ya? Then look for it to hit Walmarts on July 26th and be available "while supplies last."

Acer launches easyStore Home Server: 1TB expandable storage for $400

Acer's entering the home server market, and its first entry's gonna be the easyStore AH340-UA230N with built-in Windows Home Server. It's juiced up with Intel Atom 230 processor and 2GB DDR2 RAM, and in addition to 1TB of storage, you've got three 3.5-inch hot swappable bays for a possible total of 7TB of storage. Throw in some DLNA 1.5 certification and a $400 price tag, and you've got yourself pretty decent competitor to HP's MediaSmart lineup. According to the presser, it should be available sometime around now-ish. Mosey on after the break for a look at the its innards.

Sony VAIO NW: 15.5-inch Blu-ray notebook from $880

Sony have announced a new VAIO laptop, the NW-series, packing a 15.5-inch WXGA XBRITE display, 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P7350 processor and an optional Blu-ray drive. The Sony VAIO NW is also being priced competitively: the standard model is $800, while adding Blu-ray to that is just $80 more.

Other specifications include an optional ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 graphics card, standard webcam and chiclet keyboard. Connectivity includes three USB 2.0 ports, an ExpressCard slot, SD and Memory Stick card slots, and HDMI; there’s also a dedicated “display off” button to switch off the VAIO’s screen when using an external monitor, and an instant-on mode for speedy internet access without booting into Windows Vista.

WiFi a/b/g/n, a 400GB hard-drive and up to 4GB of DDR2 memory are on offer, while battery life ranges from a paltry 1.5hrs with the standard pack and up to 5.5hrs with the extra-chunky pack. The NW-series will be available in white, grey and brown, complete with a strangely textured lid finish, chiclet keyboard and translucent trackpad.

ASUS U and UX ultraportable specifications confirmed

ASUS have released full specifications for their new U- and UX-series ultraportables, announced back at CeBIT. Five U-series models are detailed, together with two UX-series; processors range from Intel’s CULV line, Pentiums, Core 2 Solo and Core 2 Duo chips. Displays range from the 12.1-inch U20A through to two 15.6-inch models, the U50G and U51Vg.

Each can be outfitted with up to 4GB of DDR2 memory, with hard-drive choice for most models being 250, 320 or 500GB 2.5-inch SATA drives. Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and WiFi a/b/g/n is also present across the board, and the displays are all LED backlit. Several of the models also have integrated optical drives.

Graphics range from Intel’s GMA 4500MHD chipset through to the NVIDIA GeForce G 105M and ATI Mobility Radeon HD4570. Full specifications of all five notebooks, including which versions of Vista they can be bought with, are in the gallery below.

ASUS U50VG, K50AB, K50IJ and K70AB notebooks arrive

ASUS have announced a number of new notebooks, including both Intel and AMD powered machines and with screen sizes ranging from 15.6- to 17.3-inches. Of the new models, perhaps the most interesting is this, the U50VG-XX060C, a 15-6-inch Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 2.1GHz machine with 4GB of RAM and NVIDIA GeForce G 105M 512MB graphics.

The U50VG has a 250GB hard-drive, 16:9 aspect display running at 1366 x 768, and an HDMI port, together with a 1.3-megapixel webcam and WiFi b/g/n. The chiclet-style keyboard is backlit, and it’s set to land in Italy priced at €943.20 including tax ($1,320).

Meanwhile the similarly 15.6-inch K50-series gets a few new models, in the shape of the AMD Turion 64X2 Ultra ZM-84 2.3GHz K50AB and the Intel Pentium dual-core T4200 2GHz K50IJ. Both have 4GB of RAM, while the former has ATI Mobility Radeon HD4570 512MB graphics and the latter uses Intel GMA X4500HD graphics with shared memory. The K50AB is €793.20 ($1,110) while the K50IJ is €628.80 ($880), both inclusive of tax.

The final new 15.6-inch model is the ASUS F52Q-SX071E, another Pentium dual-core machine (the 2GHz T3200) this time with 2GB of RAM and the GL40 chipset. Intended as a business model, it comes with Vista but can be downgraded to Windows XP, and is priced at €643.20 ($898).

Finally, ASUS have two 17.3-inch models in the shape of the AMD-powered K70AB-TY002C and K70AB-TY001C. The former uses an AMD Turion 64X2 RM 74 2.2GHz processor, while the latter steps up to an AMD Turion 64X2 Ultra ZM-84 running at 2.3GHz; both machines have 4GB of DDR2 RAM and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD4570 with 512MB of memory driving a 1,600 x 900 LED-backlit display. The two notebooks will go on sale for €793.20 ($1,107) and €868.80 ($1,215) respectively.

eMachines intros ET1300-02, ET1810-01 and ET1810-03 desktop PCs

Just a few short weeks after eMachines outed its EL1300 line of SFF PCs, the company is hitting us up again with a new trio of full-size desktops. The ET1300-02, ET1810-01 and ET1810-03 are all encased within a luminous white mini-tower and ship with a matching LCD monitor, speakers and a keyboard. As for specs, the $449.99 ET1300-02 checks in with an AMD Athlon X2 4850e (2.5GHz) CPU, Vista Home Premium, NVIDIA's GeForce G100 (512MB), 3GB of DDR2 memory, a 160GB hard drive, 18x SuperMulti DVD burner, multicard reader, HDMI / DVI / VGA outputs and an 18-inch E182H display. The $369.99 ET1810-03 steps to a 2.2GHz Pentium E2210 CPU, GeForce 7500 integrated graphics and just a single VGA port, while the $299.99 ET1810-01 cranks it down to a 1.6GHz Celeron 420 and 2GB of DDR2 RAM. The trio should be filtering out to respected retailers as we speak.

NVIDIA said to be prepping Ion 2 for late 2009

NVIDIA obviously isn't doing much talking about it itself just yet, but Fudzilla apparently has it on good authority that the company is indeed already hard at work on Ion 2, which promises to bring with it plenty of improvements over the already impressive Ion chipset. Chief among those is a decreased die size, "much faster graphics," and more than twice the shaders of the original Geforce 9400M /MCP79 chipset that the current Ion is based on (which uses 16 shaders). Not many more details than that, unfortunately, but NVIDIA is supposedly looking to launch Ion 2 by the end of this year -- although not before it sells plenty more Ion 1s, of course.

iBUYPOWER launches Core i7-packin' Paladin XLC desktop

Nearly a month to the day after iBUYPOWER launched its gamer-centric M865TU gaming laptop, the outfit has now given the desktop gamers in attendance something to consider. The liquid cooled Paladin XLC series is comprised of three well appointed models, the XLC V1, XLC V2 and XLC V3. All three of 'em are stored in the monstrous Coolermaster HAF 922 (the V3 gets a HAF 932), while even the lowest end model gets a Core i7-920 processor. Other specs include up to 12GB of DDR3 RAM, as many as three NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 GPUs, upwards of 1TB of HDD space, optional Blu-ray support and Windows Vista Home Premium. The trifecta can be ordered now for $1,399, $2,159 or $4,299 in order of mention.

Psystar bounces back from Chapter 11, intros new high-end hardware

Everybody's favorite fuzzy little Apple clone maker is back from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection (we're still waiting on that revelatory outing of creditors that Apple is so hungry for), and already has a new product in the offering. Psystar's new Open(7) hardware runs Intel Nehalem Xeon, which should provide a nice performance jolt to hackintosh land. Psystar is also going to start using a new bootloader called Darwin Universal Boot Loader, which will eventually be released to open source. Oh, and just in case you were wondering: a little bit of bankruptcy hasn't softened the company's confrontational spirit: Psystar says it's ready to "emerge and again battle Goliath," and that when "life gives you apples, make applesauce." It's kind of cute, really.

EMTEC dips toes into nettop market with Ion-based G Box

We're used to seeing nettops from the likes of Asus and Acer, but EMTEC's the newcomer in this field and let's see what we're working with. At about one inch thick by TechDigest's estimates, the G Box (working title) certainly compact, and we definitely give points to it running NVIDIA's Ion platform, Windows XP, at least six USB ports, and a 160GB hard drive. Unfortunately, there's no HDMI port -- that's coming in a later model -- and at £179 ($293 US), we'd be hard pressed to pick this over the HDMI-equipped AspireRevo, but we'll await judgment until we can try this thing out for ourselves. In the meantime, hit up the read link for a brief video hands-on.

Packard Bell imedia lineup gets an Acer-inspired refresh

Packard Bell recently overhauled its logo in an effort to keep up with the times, but are its offerings up to the same task? The new imedia lineup immediately recalls the recently announced M-series desktops from Acer, and that's no accident. The innards are remarkably similar too, with the top models sporting Core 2 Quad or AMD Phenom II X4 processors, a 1.5GB GeForce GT230, HDMI out, Blu-Ray combo drive and a maximum of 8GB DDR3 memory and 1TB of storage. While none of the specs are on the blistering edge of innovation, there's plenty of power there and keen pricing could make them an attractive proposition. The entry-level Celeron-based units start at £299 ($490) in the UK.

Bristol's ViewSurfer TVs let you use XP from 10 feet away

Face it, we're not normal. Most consumers don't want to convert their home PCs into media centers. That doesn't stop them from wanting a single device serving as both their TV and PC, however. That's where the 22- and 32-inch Bristol ViewSurfer PC/TVs carve out their niche. Each set features a FreeView tuner and an integrated, netbook-like, Atom-based Windows XP computer with 160GB of storage, 1GB of memory, 4x USB, and Ethernet. The PC lacks integrated WiFi, oddly enough, and the TV seems to function in complete isolation from the computer processing -- so no integrated DVR, for example. The £500 (about $814) 22-inch model does feature a 1680 x 1050 pixel resolution, well above the 1024 x 600 display found in most netbooks. Not that you'll be pushing Flash-based video from YouTube or BBC's iPlayer full-screen as these ViewSurfers are undoubtedly saddled with Intel's integrated 945GSE netbook graphics. Bristol remains mum about the specs on the 32 incher. Available in October if you're still game.

GB intros budget-priced, Atom-based X1200 thin-and-light

This one doesn't look to be heading into the hands of consumers just yet, but China's GB is now apparently shopping its new X1200 thin-and-light around on the OEM market in the hope that some company will pick it up and do their rebadging thing with it -- and from the looks of it, they likely won't have much trouble finding some takers. Like some other hard to peg down laptops, this one packs the still somewhat rare combo of a 12-inch screen and an Atom processor, along with some otherwise standard specs including 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, a built-in webcam, and a pair of USB ports. No word on a potential price just yet, but it'll no doubt be a fair bit more than the 2,200 yuan (or $322) that GB itself is currently asking for it -- in large quantities, presumably.

Dell launches Design Studio for Inspiron 15, new FastTrack delivery service

Hey, you in the market for a cheap laptop with some crazy custom artwork glued to the lid? Dell's got you covered -- the Inspiron 15 has just been brought into the Design Studio fold, meaning you'll be able to select graphics from a wide variety of artists when you spec out your system. Most artwork seems to be priced around $60, but we're told that could vary -- considering the base Inspy 15 is just $499, we're assuming / hoping the ceiling won't be much higher. Dell's also launching a new FastTrack next-day delivery service for pre-configured machines -- the company claims it's constantly tracking orders and will be able to keep the most popular models on hand. Of course, that's sort of the opposite of the whole "totally custom laptop" thing Dell's pushing with Design Studio, but hey, sometimes you need a bog-standard PC, and you need it now

Getac 9213 "business rugged" laptop tones down the toughness, the ugly

Looking for something a little tougher than your average notebook yet a little less fugly than your typical Toughbook? Getac's 9213 is a "business rugged" device that sports a full magnesium alloy chassis, a spill-resistant keyboard and touchpad, and a 13.3-inch WXGA display. With a 45nm Intel Core 2 Duo Penryn-class ULV processor, 3GB of RAM, a shock-mounted HDD (up to 250GB), and a battery life of up to eight hours, this guy shouldn't be slouch as far as performance goes -- and if that weren't enough you can swap out the optical drive for a second battery (extending its life another fifty percent or so). As you'd imagine, the connectivity options here include draft-n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1, and an optional 3.75G HSUPA module. Man, we can't wait to put this bad boy through one of our sadistic torture tests! Available now with an MSRP of $1,799.

Sony Vaio W hands-on roundup

Looks like our friends across the pond were among the lucky few to get a their hands on Sony's Vaio W netbook -- that still feels weird to write -- and the big takeaway here is that despite its size, the 10.1-inch, 1366 x 768 resolution screen is gorgeous. As for video, though, it's still an Atom-powered portable with integrated Intel GMA graphics, meaning smooth HD is more or less out of the question. The good news if it pans out, however, is that Sony will likely offer a 2GB RAM update, which should help out a bit. There was also near-universal love for the keyboard, with PC Pro being the lone exception, decreeing it just average when compared to what the Samsung N110 offered. Battery life couldn't be tested, and as for price? Well, no one seemed too bothered by the £400 tag, but we still maintain our own reservations until we get some time with it ourselves.

Lenovo's IdeaPad S10-2 reviewed: great battery life, but more of the same

Lenovo's S10-2 was a minor update to the original S10 (to put things nicely), but that's not to say it's not worth a look for those in the market for a 10-inch netbook. Boasting a slightly thinner, more beautified frame, the S10-2 also includes a tweaked keyboard, optional 3G, an extra USB port and none of the quirks that plagued the first edition. The benchmarking fiends over at HotHardware managed to sneak one of these things into their labs for testing, and while they largely found the S10-2 to be about the same as every other N270 + GMA 950 netbook out there, the 5.5 hour battery life was definitely impressive. All told, the S10-2 was found to be solid from top to bottom, but the $350 price tag did feel a bit steep considering just how many alternatives are out there. Still, even with the positive vibes, it's hard to recommend buying a WinXP netbook now with Windows 7 (and thus, no hardware limitations) just around the bend.

Sony announces VAIO W netbook

Sure, the Japanese press release translates to "internet book," but there's no mistaking that 10.1-inch screen and 1.6GHz Atom running Windows XP on 1GB of RAM: Sony's new VAIO W is a netbook, folks. We're not sure how or why the company decided to enter this market after six months of hawking the overpriced VAIO P and insisting that netbooks were a "race to the bottom," but we're itching to see what the US price tag on this guy is with a nicer-than-usual 1366 x 768 screen, what we're hoping is a typically-solid VAIO keyboard, and some sort of home media-streaming software called VAIO Media Plus, the W could be a big winner if it's not crazy-expensive. Fingers crossed! Video after the break.

Update: We just watched the video kind of an ugly little bastard, innit? ASUS and Acer are way beyond this chunky design language now, and honestly, we expect way more from Sony.

Sony Vaio W netbook now official in US, coming August for $499

Not so much of a surprise now, but Sony's bringing its 10.1-inch Vaio W stateside as well, and yes, according to the Sony reps we talked to, this time they really do mean to call it a netbook, unlike its Vaio P brethren. Likewise, with that nomenclature comes none too surprising specs, including a 1.6GHz Atom processor, 160GB HDD, 1GB RAM, Windows XP, Bluetooth, 802.11b/g/n, VGA out, two USB ports, Ethernet, webcam, and MemoryStick / SD card readers. The three cell battery should last an estimated three hours, and like usual there's also an option for six cell. That isolated (read: chiclet) keyboard is said to be 86% the size of a normal typing surface, and the aforementioned bundled VAIO Media plus software enables content streaming across DLNA-enabled devices like the PC or PlayStation 3.

Now for what's missing: the reps stressed this an "in-home" product for them, and as such there's no talk of 3G or GPS, nor should hold your breath for an optical drive or SSD option. The company stressed the hardware's build quality here, and while we'll have to wait until we get our hands on to validate, like we said before, the pics aren't exactly flattering when you look at what the competition is producing. All that's left to discuss for now is the release date, pricing, and color options, so in order: just around the $500 mark, mid-August, and berry pink, sugar white and cocoa brown. Welcome to the bottom, guys.

Sony's VAIO P 'mark 2' hopefully learns from past mistakes

While we had high hopes for Sony's sleek and beautifully crafted VAIO P back in the day, it's become a major point of frustration and thus, ridicule, ever since we first powered it up. This $900ish ultra-portable is the very symbol of what tends to go wrong at Sony: beautiful hardware is crippled by software leaving consumers wondering why they paid a premium for such an undistinguished user experience. Now Techradar is reporting that Sony has a VAIO P "mark 2" ready to launch in October or November -- we suspect right after Windows 7 launches. The only real detail provided is that the "mark 2" will feature a "much-improved boot-up time." Whether that's the result of inherently fast-booting Windows 7 alone or via some third party Instant-on technology like Corel, well, Sony isn't saying.

F88 netbook stands out with HD playback, VIA Nano

What do we have here then? An OEM netbook, looking remarkably like a recent ASUS iteration, has come to our attention with some bold claims in tow. Spec'd with a 1.6GHz VIA Nano processor and S3 Chrome 9 graphics, this promises to be one of the most potent netbooks yet and backs up that claim with up to 4GB of memory and 500GB of storage. The major attraction of all this extra juice is full 1080p video playback, which is somewhat confounded by the 1024 x 600 resolution and 10.1-inch screen, but can be pumped out to an external display via HDMI. Expect this to be rebadged and hitting store shelves some time soonish, at which point we may consider the distinction between netbooks and laptops entirely academic
